Pocket Maps Privacy Policy

Pocket Maps is developed and owned by Herenga ā Nuku Aotearoa, the Outdoor Access Commission. It is made available, free of charge, so people can explore public access land safely and learn more about different public access and recreation opportunities across Aotearoa.
Purpose
The purpose of this privacy policy is to let users of Pocket Maps (the ‘app’) know when the developer Herenga ā Nuku (‘we’) collect personal information and what we do with it.
We do not use, share or transfer personal information in connection with the app except as set out in this policy.
Collection, storage and use of personal information
You are not required to provide personal information to us in order to use the app.
You may choose to voluntarily disclose personal information to us when you give feedback via the feedback button or in user survey submission forms. This information can be viewed by site administrators, Herenga ā Nuku staff and sometimes third-party contractors who administer or work on the app.
When you provide personal information to us, we will comply with the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020.
Holding of information
If you provide personal information, it is held by Herenga ā Nuku. We do not make mail addresses available to the public. Unless required by law, we won’t publicise the names or email addresses of individuals who provide feedback to us, or of those who provide us with submission forms, without their consent.
Use of personal information
We’ll only use personal information provided to us for:
- administering, evaluating and improving the Pocket Maps user experience
- communicating with you, including responding to your feedback and information in submission forms.
Feedback
Feedback is important and is used to evaluate and improve Pocket Maps. If you provide feedback via the feedback button in the app, that feedback to the appropriate Herenga ā Nuku staff within the Pocket Maps development team.
Information collected by the feedback mechanism is limited to written comments you provide, your name, email address, device type, Pocket Maps version and any maps currently downloaded.
We may pass on relevant comments and submissions to other people within Herenga ā Nuku, other government agencies or third parties who administer or are participating in the ongoing development of Pocket Maps or issue the feedback relates to. This could include your email address and other identifying information that you’ve provided.
User surveys
We may occasionally make in-app user experience surveys available to users of Pocket Maps, in order to better understand your use of the app and areas for improvement.
All user surveys are optional and no personal information outside of your email address is collected unless expressly stated within the survey.
We may pass on relevant comments and responses from user surveys to other people within Herenga ā Nuku, other government agencies or third parties who administer or are participating in the ongoing development of Pocket Maps or issue the feedback relates to. This will not include your email address or any other identifying information you’ve provided.
Statistical information and cookies
Basic statistics about the use of the app such as the number of crash events, downloads, uninstalls, sessions and active devices are made available to Herenga ā Nuku via the app’s respective publishing platforms Google Play Store and App Store.

This information is anonymised and is only used to understand and improve the performance and usability of the app.
Pocket Maps does not collect cookies from users.
Records and disclosure statement
Public records, official information and Parliament
Herenga ā Nuku is a crown entity and part of the New Zealand government. As such any information we hold is subject to the following:
Your emails and contributions to the app may constitute public records and be retained to the extent required by the Public Records Act 2005. Herenga ā Nuku may also need to disclose those materials under the Official Information Act 1982 or to a Parliamentary Select Committee or Parliament in response to a parliamentary question.
Correcting your personal information
Your rights
Under the Privacy Act 2020, you have the right to access and ask us to correct or delete any of your personal information provided to Herenga ā Nuku in connection with your use of Pocket Maps.
Contact us if:
- you would like to see or change your personal information Herenga ā Nuku has stored
- you would like to have your personal information deleted from our records
- you have any concerns regarding your privacy.
Herenga ā Nuku may require proof of your identity before being able to provide you with any personal information.

Changes to our privacy policy
It is Herenga ā Nuku’s policy to post any changes we make to this policy on our website and in the app itself. We will not reduce your rights under this privacy policy without your consent in accordance with applicable law. The date the privacy policy was last revised is identifiable at the top of the page.
With respect to any changes to the policy, you have the right to request access to, and correction of, any of the personal information we hold about you. If you wish to have your information deleted, you can request this at any time, and we will remove all the information we hold about you from our systems.
